contacted by students Everyone I approached gave me an interview and put me in contact with other academics or professionals related to my research Belgrade s excellent programme of cultural events provided another avenue to make contacts I spent time finding and attending relevant exhibitions lectures and conferences I also used the internet to find companies NGOs and other organisations who were connected to urban development or the property market Again most people were open to being interviewed by a researcher It was harder to recruit participants who did not have a professional interest in the property market or in planning Through contacts I was able to recruit some participants willing to be interviewed Most people were happy to discuss my topic in general but I think if I had been associated with an organisation I would have aroused less suspicion and perhaps have recruited more participants for in depth interviews Occasionally I was asked to provide references from my university and from an institution in Serbia When I provided these people were willing to give me some time usually over an hour to discuss my research or answer my questions It was harder for me to get follow up
