  • SEE-GRID-SCI: SEE-GRID eInfrastructure for regional eScience
    research The South East European eInfrastructure initiatives are committed to ensuring equal participation of the less resourced countries of the region in European trends SEEREN initiative has established a regional network and its GÉANT connection and the SEE GRID initiative the regional Grid SEE GRID SCI leverages the SEE eInfrastructure to enable new scientific collaborations among user communities and stimulates widespread eInfrastructure uptake by new user groups extending over the region fostering collaboration and providing advanced capabilities to more researchers with an emphasis on strategic groups in seismology meteorology and environmental protection The initiative thus aims to have a catalytic and structuring effect on target user communities that currently do not directly benefit from the available infrastructures In parallel it aims to enlarge the regional eInfrastructure to cater for demands of the communities by increasing the computing and storage resources and involving new partner countries in the region Finally SEE GRID SCI targets to help mature and stabilise the National Grid Initiatives in the region allowing them to join the new era of longer term sustainable Grid infrastructure in Europe In longer term SEE GRID SCI aspires to contribute to the stabilisation and development of South East Europe by easing

  • OI 141035: Modeling and Numerical Simulations of Complex Physical Systems
    choice to attack complex problems in physics i e problems involving systems consisting of many bodies and or having many degrees of freedom which are not easily amenable to standard experimental or theoretical investigations Numerical modelling and simulations are heuristic tools making it possible to view new and previously inaccessible domains in science and to build up intuition on the new phenomenology The goal of this process is to translate new found intuition into better algorithms and new analytical results Project 141035 is built around the Scientific Computing Laboratory best ranked EU centre of excellence in the region under FP6 project CX CMCS and its state of the art computing communication and storage facilities The purpose of the project is to harness these resources to gain key insight into the following research topics Efficient calculation of path integrals Modeling and numerical simulations of granular systems Investigation of strongly correlated quantum systems Modeling of transport processes in the Earth atmosphere system Apart from the aforementioned research topics we plan to continue ongoing research on related problems including modeling of gravitational accretion and the study of dynamics on scale free networks News 12 February 2016 SCL Seminar by Jelena Smiljanic 12 January

  • CX-CMCS: EU Centre of Excellence for Computer Modeling of Complex Systems
    and of GRID technology SCL is a unit of the Institute of Physics in Belgrade The Institute contributes more than 10 of the total scientific output of Serbia and constantly ranks among the best R D institutions in the region SCL currently has 17 staff members and participates in several international and national projects including FP6 projects CX CMCS SEE GRID SEE GRID 2 EGEE II and Cost action P10 Physics of Risk SCL defines the current state of the art in high performance computing in the West Balkan region with its PARADOX cluster CX CMCS aims to reinforce the research capacity of the SCL by hiring young researchers providing training and mobility for the research staff upgrading the computing infrastructure The success of this endeavor will be measured through a benchmarking exercise to be performed in the projects last year Our networking partners 4 from EU and 3 from Serbia have been carefully selected to provide the skills and expertise necessary to reinforce the research potential of SCL through training and joint research The proposed equipment upgrade will make it possible to tackle even the most complex GRID applications allowing SCL to become a key regional player in deployment

    Dialogue countries to collaborate on priority research areas The aim of the NATO Reintegration Grant is to support the reintegration of young Partner country scientists in their home countries after conducting research in NATO countries Reintegration Grants are intended to give the returning fellow the means necessary to start a scientific career in his home country and to establish a research team in the research institution of his choice A Reintegration Grant awarded to Dr Darko Tanaskovic is intended to support research activity on Electronic Structure Calculations of Complex Materials Thermodynamic and transport properties of novel strongly correlated materials like high temperature superconductors heavy fermions transition metal oxides and actinides will be calculated using dynamical mean field theory and its very recent extension LDA DMFT The proposed research is a direct continuation of the successful collaboration with Prof Vladimir Dobrosavljevic from National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee Florida USA It draws upon the expertise gained during the applicants doctoral studies at Florida State University The high performance computing resources at the Institute of Physics in Belgrade will greatly facilitate the fulfillment of the proposed program News 12 February 2016 SCL Seminar by Jelena Smiljanic 12 January 2016 In memoriam

    is to establish nano crystalline porous anatase Titanium dioxide TiO2 for environmental technologies specifically to pollutant detection and solar energy capture technologies through combined experimental simulation theory efforts TiO2 is an important photo catalyst due to its strong oxidizing power non toxicity and long term photo stability The interest in nano crystalline anatase TiO2 has been driven by its potential for a variety of technological applications including photo catalysis electrochemical solar cells optoelectronic devices chemical sensors and dielectric material of thin film capacitors Together with cerium dioxide CeO2 porous TiO2 is seen as a material for the production of molecular hydrogen from water using sun energy in a photo catalytic reaction process In addition nanocrystalline anatase TiO2 is a weak magnetic semiconductor with proven room temperature ferromagnetism This opens the possibility for the use of TiO2 in second generation spintronic devices Its ferromagnetic properties can be enhanced with the addition of transition metals such as iron cobalt or vanadium Approximately 4 million tons of TiO2 are consumed annually worldwide the principle use today being that of a bright white pigment News 12 February 2016 SCL Seminar by Jelena Smiljanic 12 January 2016 In memoriam Nikola Buric 28 December 2015 SCL
